PE and Swimming

At Barkway First School all children go swimming from Reception to Year 4. Being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill. Swimming is lots of fun for people of all ages and children especially love getting in the water and enjoying themselves. But it is not just fun, swimming also provides loads of health benefits which can help to keep your children healthy and happy at the same time. Swimming provides challenges and rewards accomplishments, which helps children to become self-confident and believe in their abilities, all lessons are carried out with fully trained professionals at Royston Leisure Centre.

We have just been awarded the Schools Gold Award.

Autumn and Winter Sport

Throughout the year the activities are always weather dependant but we try in the Autumn term to cover Tag Rugby, Football and Quicksticks Hockey. Throughout the year we participate in the School Sports Partnership events and take part in the Tag Rugby , Rounders, Cross Country, Tennis and Football Festivals against other schools. We also arrange specialist events such as BMX Cycling and Street Dance. After school clubs are a regular feature.

Spring and Summer Sport

Following through to the Spring term activities are more indoors based and include gymnastics, multi-skills and dance as well as cross country when the weather allows We always prepare for our annual Maypole Day and traditional dance forms a strong part of our curriculum. In the Summer term we move on to Tennis, Cricket, Rounders and Athletics, culminating in our school sports day at the end of the term.

Sports News!

Votes are in and counted and we are delighted to announce that our new School Sports Organising Crew Representatives (SsoC Reps) will be: Amelie Coomes, Joshua Wickens, Maddy Burling and William Brown. The children have chosen them to make sure that their voices are heard when decisions are made about school sports and pupils' physical development. This is a job of great responsibility and impact, and we wish them the very best with their new role. Next week the crew will receive their welcome packs, ID cards and details of their first task.

In other news, our new dance coach, Mr Sapsed, has started choreographing a dance routine with the Hedgehogs Class. Our aim is that the Reception children will perform this in an inter-school dance competition in the New Year, we will keep you updated!

Barley and Barkway schools received their new kit from the Premier League Primary Stars scheme and immediately the KS2 class tried it out !   The kit looked fantastic on the children and they were very excited to be wearing Nike Kit sponsored by the Premier League.

Once the Kit was donned the children couldn't wait to try out their football skills and had a full session  showing a full range of football skills that they hopefully will use in subsequent matches against other schools.

A great response from the children and a roaring success for all concerned.
